Production Designer (Print) >>

  • One of 2 designers responsible each week for creating all print ads for the newspaper. The clients were a broad range from restaurants and clubs to furniture stores, real estate agents, law firms and car dealers.  I was responsible for making these ads to fit client specifications and branding, revising based on client feedback and making any changes before sending the paper to the press. On average I would work on close to 150 ads per week.
  • Personally responsible for all layout and pagination of the classifieds section of the news paper. Usually this was the last 25 pages of the paper. This process involved collecting all the completed ads from the production week and placing them in the appropriate section of the paper, pouring all the test classified ads around them and finally adjusting the whole layout to make it as well organized and readable as possible while still being aesthetically pleasing.

Webmaster >>

  • Created a full Content Management System for the newspaper. This included Identifying the best base software to use, customizing the code to make it work as needed, adding features for contests, photo galleries, music reviews and many more special purposes as needed.  The key was customizing existing software, developing new features and then integrating all of it to make every aspect of the site work together.
  • Customized databases to allow storage, display and searching of all new stories printed in the paper as well as old stories from previous versions of the website.
  • Built and maintained the Linux web server for the site. Applied security measures and patches to defend from hackers and site defacing attempts. Managed all DNS and routing for the company’s domains. Handled all end-user support and questions for over 40000 website users.
  • Implemented partial offsite virtual hosting to meet new needs and better control bandwidth issues caused by high traffic to the site.
  • Managed and created all online advertising campaigns for advertising clients as well as implementing external advertising feeds to monetize the sites traffic and make it profitable for the first time since freetimes.com went online in 2001.
